What is neurodiversity?
You’ve heard of the conditions. You may be labelled with one yourself or know somebody who is.
Neurodiverse conditions include:
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Semantic Pragmatic Disorder
- And others…

We all have quirks, and nobody can define what “normal” is…
It is likely that you know somebody who won’t drive in unfamiliar places in case they get lost. Or that you have heard of people who can hear a song twice and then replicate it perfectly on their musical instrument of choice.
Whoever they may be, most of the population tend to have a few quirky traits (aspergers traits, if you like). This is normal human variation. So, I suppose we could class this as “normal”.
Now for us, neurodiverse people are simply people that have an unusually large amount of quirks, and usually to a large degree. Or in other words:
“People who think and perceive the world in a different way to what is considered to be the norm – or which goes beyond normal human variation.”
Why is Neurodiversity so important?
As outlined above, neurodiversity relates to everybody in some shape or form.
Have a few very neurodiverse people in an organisation and you may experience some difficulties. Have a few very neurodiverse people in an organisation where everybody fully understands neurodiversity and you may have an extremely valuable workforce.
